Sweatman - President
Manitoba Opera, 35th Season Coordinator
Joined Board: September 21, 2005
Sally Sweatman joined Manitoba Opera in May of 2007 as the
35th Anniversary Coordinator. She is coordinating the celebrations
for the 2007/2008 season and world premiere of Transit of
Venus, which is being marked by a number of special events
and preview concerts. Sally plans and implements audience
development and outreach activities as well as promotes
opera as an art form to the community at large.
Sally
came from Film Training Manitoba where she was the Coordinator
of the pilot Work UPgrade Program (WUP). As Work UPgrade
Coordinator, she was responsible for all aspects of the
program, including liaising with production and guild/union
representatives of the film and television industry to identify
on-set training opportunities for senior crew members and
providing ongoing support to WUP Participants/Mentors during
the work experience placements.
In 2005 Sally completed Winnipeg Technical College’s
Office Skills and Technology program, then interned at Manitoba
Film & Sound. She also worked in the extras casting
department of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward
Robert Ford and as daily crew on various other productions.
Sally is completing her final credit for the University
of Winnipeg Professional Studies Arts and Cultural Management
program.
Caroline
Evans - Secretary

Caroline Evans worked for many years in theatre, both as
a stage manager and director before joining the film community.
She holds a Master's Degree in 'Theatre and the World' from
the University of Wales in Aberystwyth. Caroline started
working in the film industry in 2004 when she was selected
for FTM’s Crew Internship program in the Locations
Department. Since then she has worked both on and off set
on movies, such as Capote, Population 436, Jesse James and
Blue State. Caroline currently works at Film Training Manitoba
as the Acting Work Experience Coordinator, managing projects
like the Internship Program. Caroline also continues to
volunteer for Independent film productions and is the co-owner
of the research company, Smith Evans Research Associates.
Nicole
Matiation Artistic

Media Consultant
Joined Board: August 27, 1996
Founding festival co-director, Nicole Matiation divides
her time between organizing the 2008 Freeze Frame festival,
facilitating media literacy workshops and providing administrative
direction. Nicole has a Masters degree in Media Studies
from Concordia University and has worked on the organization
of many conferences and public events. She has extensive
experience in administration and coordination of arts and
community organizations.
Bryan Buchalter - Director
Multi-Media Project Manager, Ironstone Technologies
Joined Board: September 21, 2005
Bryan brings to the film production industry more than 8
years of experience in CD and DVD creation, design and duplication.
Bryan’s background in the video production industry
stems from his management of B&K Studios and DVD authoring
design with Ironstone Technologies. Bryan has also produced
international award winning training videos.
Liz
Hover - Director

In 2004, Liz left London, England and headed for the Prairies.
She currently works full-time in marketing and communications
at the National Screen Institute. Liz is also a freelance
writer when she gets the chance covering local arts and
entertainment events for Uptown Magazine and other gigs
that pop up.

Joanna Black - Director
Assistant Professor of Art Education, Faculty
of Education at the University of Manitoba, Canada

Dr. Joanna Black teaches visual arts and new media education.
Her research interests and published works are on the subjects
of the virtual arts classroom, the relationship dynamics
between teachers and students in digital arts classrooms,
new media integration in arts curriculum in relation to
teacher training, and model digital visual arts schools.
Dr. Black has worked as an art director, curator, museum
art educator and teacher K-12 in public and alternative
school settings.
