Winners in Young Filmmakers’ Contests Announced at
Freeze Frame International Film Festival


Winnipeg -- Freeze Frame, International Film Festival for Kids of All Ages, celebrated rising young Canadian filmmakers at the Wee Reels and Reel Views 2008 Video Contest Awards Gala on March 17, 2008.

Now in its ninth year, the youth video competition attracted over one hundred entries in the Wee Reels category (for grades 8 and under) and over 50 in the Reel Views category (for grades 9-12). The two juries, comprised of six industry professionals selected the winning videos from over 50 finalists.

Prizes for the different awards were generously donated by a number of local organizations, including On Screen Manitoba, Radio-Canada, Manitoba Public Insurance, the National Film Board of Canada, Frantic Films, and Manitoba Theatre for Young People.

Winners of the awards in each age category are as follows:

Wee Reels

Most Promising Young Filmmaker
"The Tomato-Soccer Disaster" (Frontenac School)

Best Animation
Winner: "Super Mofy and the Rise of Miffo" by Jordan and Benjamin Vieira (home-schooled)

Honourable Mention: "The Cheese Fiasco" (Frontenac School)

Best Live Action
"Gender Differences" (Stanley Knowles School)

Best Acting
"Exclusion" (École St. Eustache)

Best PSA
Winner: "Confront Labels" (Shaughnessy Park School)

Honourable Mention: "Don't Stand By. Stand Up!" (Shaughnessy Park School)


Technical Achievement
Winner: "Words" (Shaughnessy Park School)

Honourable Mention: "Steps to Safety" (Shaughnessy Park School)

Best Film in French by a School Group
"La mauvaise decision" (Landsdowne School)

MPI Road Safety Challenge
Winners: "Steps to Safety" (Shaughnessy School) and "Be Safe. Be Aware." (Boissevain School)

Honourable Mentions: "Look Before you Cross the Road" (Boissevain School) and "Road Side Awareness" (Arthur E. Wright Community School)
