FULL DAY WORKSHOPS

10:00 am to 2:30 pm – weekdays

What type of video do your students want to make in a day? We have a great selection of workshop themes this year, from interactive filmmaking and documentaries to various forms of animation, and news reporting! Kids of all ages are given the opportunity to be involved in every area of production, whether it’s as the talent on camera or working behind the scenes. We begin with scriptwriting, the creation of a storyboard, and go through each step of the moviemaking process including editing.

FILM IN A DAY Give students a chance to explore their cinematic vision in Freeze Frame’s signature workshop. Led by an experienced filmmaker, students dream up a short story, draw a storyboard, shoot their film and edit it all in one day. This workshop will teach students what it takes to make a movie from start to finish.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE A cutting-edge workshop in which students use Youtube and embedded links to create a Choose Your Own Adventure film. Learn how to shoot various scenes and create choices for the viewer that allows them lead their own way through your film. In this workshop students get a taste of the exciting new prospect of interactive filmmaking in the digital age.

CLAYMATION Sign up for this workshop to explore the world of animation. Students will develop a story, draw a storyboard, create characters our of plasticine and then make their own short animated film. This workshop is lots of fun yet a challenging exercise that requires creativity and teamwork.

NEWS IN A DAY Give students the opportunity to tell the day to day stories that shape their world. They will create their own newscast and report on issues that matter to them. With the help of an experienced reporter from the CBC and filmmaker, students will get their best scoop on camera.

DOCUMENTARY Sign your students up for this exciting relevant new workshop. Working with a local documentary professional, students will learn how to research, script, direct and ask the tough questions needed to make a good documentary. Student-led documentaries are an amazing new way of inquiry capable of enhancing any classroom experience.

ANIMATE ON YOURSELF WORKBOOK with Mike Maryniuk*
Participants will be able to physically draw on print outs of themselves on paper. Imagine rainbow moustaches, googly eyes, birds flying in one ear and out the other, etc. Each student will receive a binder with 75 to 100 paper print outs of moving images of themselves to work with during the class, we will as a group re-photograph the re-animated versions of themselves. Each student will be able to take home their binders, giving an opportunity for more meticulous work if so desired.
* This workshop is best coupled with the Mike Maryniuk film showcase. The workshop will start right after the showcase and will continue for the whole day.

 

HALF-DAY WORKSHOPS

BIG ANIMATION Super-size your animation workshop! This unique workshop gives students the opportunity to make large-scale objects, including themselves, come to life in stop motion animation. A hit at last year’s festival, this workshop is incredibly engaging and a great twist on traditional animation.

PIXILATION Sign your students up to learn how to become the characters in their own Stop-motion sequence film. This active half-day workshop requires enthusiasm, imagination and patience.

MEDIA THEORY This exciting half-day workshop provides students with a venue to discuss, analyze and critique media. Students will have the opportunity to examine the forces that propels our world from blockbuster movies to social media. This engaging workshop is for the focused and inquisitive mind.

SCREENWRITING AND STORYBOARDING This workshop teaches students how to write and present a story. A valuable exercise for any creative expression, this half-day workshop teaches students how to clearly, concisely and creatively tell stories for movies.

EDITING WORKSHOP Students interested in technology will love this workshop that teaches how to effectively master the basics of editing software. Sign up your students for this workshop if they have an avid interest in editing and want to learn the true power of editing.

ACTING FOR THE CAMERA Students will learn to harness their dramatic flair for this half-day workshop that teaches acting for the camera.

PUPPETRY FOR THE CAMERA
Participants learn the art of puppetry with an eye of creating a puppet show for video. Workshop is led by local family puppet theatre troupe The Puppet Folk.

TWITTER STORYBOARDING In this new workshop students learn how to turn their phones into state of the art tools for storyboarding their film ideas. Using Twitter and it’s accompanying image app Twitpic, participants will tell a story through pictures and 140 word descriptions which are then sent to a website where the story unfolds in real-time. (This workshop requires phones with internet and camera capabilities. 1 phone per 3 to 5 students is ideal)
