Media Education Program

Freeze Frame graciously thanks its workshop supporters: MB Arts council (artist in the school), Arts Smarts, The Wpg Foundation

Media awareness and visual literacy for teachers and students throughout the entire school year.

Young people, teachers and various community groups enjoy Freeze Frame workshops throughout the year. We provide educational opportunities for children and youth to explore the art of filmmaking through screenings of international film and video and hands-on filmmaking workshops. All of our programs are available in both French and English, and are adaptable to any age group. Les ateliers Freeze Frame offerts toute l'année

Freeze Frame workshops are also available through Art Smarts and the Manitoba Arts Council's Artist-In-the-Schools program. Freeze Frame offers some subsidies for workshops for inner city schools, rural and northern areas on a first come first served basis.

Our philosophy

To give young people the basic tools required to produce their own videos – telling their own stories in their own voices. Many participants go on to participate in the Freeze Frame’s Youth Jury and/or Wee Reel and Reel Views video competitions.

Why a hands-on media literacy approach?

Media production is a useful means to develop critical understanding of the way visual media shapes reality. This approach offers young people the opportunity to produce their own creative work in a medium that is pervasive. Freeze Frame workshops put the tools of video production in the hands of young participants.

Learning Outcomes:

To transform students from passive watchers into dynamic actors who will gain organizational, analytical, technical and communication skills.
To encourage self-expression and independent creativity using video production or stop motion animation.

Skill Development:

Writing (scripting, storyboarding, editing)
Researching (topic, theme, lighting conditions)
Problem solving (sequencing, planning the shoots, adjusting timing of events, pacing)
Hand-eye coordination (camera work, props)
Oral presentation (acting, presenting plans)
Team skills (organizing & executing a group project)
Ability to discuss media critically and understand how it can influence the way we perceive other people, political issues, relationships, our place in the world.

Make a video with your class

Freeze Frame offers a full range of introductory and advanced video production workshops as well as media literacy workshops. Regular rate $45.00/hour plus travel costs outside of Winnipeg (includes one instructor, four cameras and four portable editing suites). Workshop Descriptions.

Movie Madness guides

Available for $15.00 each. These guides provide basic instruction in video production and media awareness.
