Festival Workshops

Freeze Frame offers unique workshops with filmmakers and artists throughout the week of the festival.

Freeze Frame propose des ateliers uniques avec des cinéastes et des artistes tout au long de la semaine du festival.

The workshops are presented in 2 hour blocks, once in the morning (10 am to 12 pm) and in the afternoon (1 pm to 3 pm).

Les ateliers sont présentés en bloque de 2 heures , une fois le matin ( de 10h à 12h) et en après-midi (13h à 15h).

Dynamic Illustration / Illustration dynamique

Facilitated by Cato Cormier

During this workshop - with scissors, glue and colour - we will explore the tactile art of dynamic illustration. Each participant will create their own creative and moveable illustration, containing various imaginative mechanisms that reveal and marvel!

Lors de cet atelier - à coup de ciseau, de colle et de couleur - nous explorerons l'art tactile de l'illustration dynamique. Chaque participant créera sa propre illustration ingénieuse et mouvementée, contenant plusieurs mécanismes magiques qui révèlent et qui émerveillent !

Cato Cormier is a self-taught artist and foodie based in Winnipeg. Her stylized and playful illustrations and comics feature characters that are sometimes sharp, sometimes soft.

Cato Cormier est une artiste autodidacte et gourmande basée à Winnipeg. Ses illustrations et bandes dessinées stylisés et ludiques sont caractérisées par des personages parfois pointus, parfois moelleux.

Shadow Puppets

Facilitated by Curtis Wiebe

Join Curtis in an introduction to one of the oldest forms of puppetry: Shadow puppets! Curtis will take participants through the process of designing and building their own shadow puppets before leading the group in a shadow puppet parade across a specially made screen. (Limit of 25 students)

Curtis L. Wiebe is a multidisciplinary artist who has a special interest in puppetry, film and music.  His award winning short films have screened all over the world in places like New York and at the Cannes film festival in France.  Curtis has been an art instructor at the Winnipeg Art Gallery since 2010 teaching students from the Seven Oaks and Winnipeg School divisions through the WAG's sponsored art programs.

Stop Motion Essentials

Facilitated by Connor Yarish

In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of paper cutout animation by building and animating their own character.

Connor Yarish is an educator and stop motion animator based in Winnipeg. Working under the name Slumbo Animation, he makes short films, commissioned works, and other short-form content using clay, paper, puppets, and everyday objects.

When? FRIDAY, MARCH 13 at 10 am at the CCFM (FULL)

Connor will discuss stop motion ahead of the screening of Living Large Friday afternoon

Collaborative Comics Adventure

Facilitated by Natalie Mark

Together we will create characters from nothing and take them on a fun adventure! Students will work in groups to create a comic panel. Play, draw, and have fun! (Limit 25 students)

Natalie Mark 麥月明 is a cartoonist engaged with community art and arts education. They have facilitated various art projects for Winnipeg’s Chinatown, and run many art and comic workshops in Winnipeg and beyond. Natalie’s comics are somewhere between a reflection of life and small curiosities; a tool for understanding the world around them. When? WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11 at the Aabijijiwan New Media Lab (599 Portage Ave.)

Hand Drawn Looping Animation

Facilitated by Matthis Grunsky

This workshop will explore the production of handmade animated GIFs using both material and digital tools. Participants will create their own looping animations using physical drawing media alongside purpose-made animation software. Emphasis will be placed on experimentation in the workshop and attendees will be encouraged to explore materiality, abstraction, texture, and rhythm in their work in addition to narrative and storytelling.

Matthis Grunsky is an artist and educator originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He currently lives in Winnipeg, MB, Treaty 1 Territory, where he teaches at the University of Manitoba School of Art. Using computer code as connective tissue, Matthis’ artistic practice spans multiple material disciplines, including painting, drawing, screen-based installation, and procedural animation. In both his educational and artistic work, Matthis advocates for a higher degree of technological literacy around the ever-expanding set of digital tools that continue to define contemporary creative practice.

Atelier animation stop-motion

Cet atelier explique les bases de l'animation stop-motion avant de laisser les élèves réaliser leur propre court métrage. Travaillant en groupes, les élèves inventent une histoire à l'aide de scénarimages, créent leurs propres décors et personnages, puis les animent à l'aide de l'équipement fourni par Freeze Frame.
