Intro to Livestreaming * BOOKED *

Tuesday, March 12, 1 PM to 3 PM @ aabijijiwan New Media Lab (599 Portage Avenue, 3rd floor, Room 3RC060)

Learn the basics of livestream production using accessible software and technology. This workshop includes learning to use green screen in live scenarios, using OBS for your livestream, what the roles are on set and other need-to-know information for you to set up a stream.

 

Facilitated by Daphne Finlayson

Daphne (she/her) is a director and creator based in Winnipeg. She is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a BA in Theatre and Film Studies. In 2022, she graduated with honours from the inaugural Red River College Digital Film and Media Production program. She has worked on film sets around Manitoba as well as theatre companies such as Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Prairie Theatre Exchange, The Keep Theatre, and Rainbow Stage. Daphne is also an accomplished producer, having programmed a slate of original digital programming for the Village Conservatory and Rainbow Stage’s 2022 Digital Studio. She specializes in blending live performance with digital technology through her dual backgrounds in theatre and film.

Make a short stop motion film! Students will create a character and learn about the process of stop motion animation in this workshop.

 

Facilitated by Sidney Phommarath

Sidney Phommarath is a Lao-Canadian filmmaker from Winnipeg, MB. She graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a degree in Filmmaking and a minor in Human rights. She has been working in the film industry for 3 years and has produced various films through the CBC Creator Network. Her main focus is documentary filmmaking which is fueled by her passion for honest storytelling.

 

PHYTOGRAM Animation * BOOKED *

Friday, March 15, 1 PM to 3 PM @ Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain (340 Provencher Boulevard)

Come make a 16mm film with the help of a variety of plants: flowers, herbs, fruits! The phytogram process developed by Karel Doing involves soaking organic materials in a mixture of vitamin C and washing soda, then laying them on top of film emulsion to create an imprint while exposing them to light. Fixer is required to keep them light safe and archival (involves chemicals).

Kristiane Church is an artist working in filmmaking, photography, installation, and performance. Her practice centers image and world making, the camera and positioning of body and voice. She works as a cinematographer for various filmmakers, as well as the Photography Technician at the School of Art (U of M). She has been the coordinator and projectionist of the One Take Super 8 Event put on by WNDX Festival of Moving Image for the past three years.

An introductory workshop for stop motion with our guest filmmaker Dennis Jackson, director and writer of Chums!

 

Facilitated by Dennis Jackson

Dennis Jackson began his career in elementary school watching 16mm prints of animation on aboriginal creation tales. Since this introduction, he has excelled in writing stories about his Cree ancestry with the help of his mother and grandparents.  He proudly received the 2009 National Aboriginal Achievement Award for the Arts and a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Regina in 2015. Currently, Dennis has developed a preschool animated series Chums, about a group of young friends learning about Turtle Island through traditional stories and helping each other.

 

paper cut out workshop with Paul Robles * BOOKED *

Thursday, March 14 @ aabijijiwan New Media Lab (599 Portage Avenue, 3rd floor, Room 3RC060)

Artist Paul Robles will take participants through the process of creating paper cut out character and scenery that will be used to make short stop motion scene. Please note that this workshop will include the use of a blade to cut out intricate shapes from paper - students grade 5 and up preferred.

Paul Robles is a Canadian artist based in Winnipeg, Canada, on Treaty 1 Territory. Robles holds a BFA from the University of Manitoba School of Art and Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from The University of Winnipeg. He has exhibited widely in Canada, USA, and France. His work was the subject of the exhibition “Tracing Paths” at C2-Centre for Craft, Winnipeg (2019), and was included in the group exhibition “A Pea Can Be Chopped Up and Reassembled Into The Sun” at the Regina Art Gallery (2021). In 2023 his work was included in “The Undead Archive: 100 Years of Photographic Ghosts,” an exhibition shown across Gallery 1C03, the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections and the University of Manitoba School of Art Gallery, Winnipeg. A review of the exhibition was published in Border Crossings, where a Portfolio of his work was also featured in 2007. Robles has produced an outdoor installation for Nuit Blanche (Winnipeg & Waterloo, ON) and has been showcased during the Wall-to-Wall Mural Festival in 2021. He has participated in Plug In ICA’s Summer Institute Residence Program, and Papier Art Fair, Montreal. In 2024, he is the artist in residence at aabijijiwan New Media Lab, University of Winnipeg. His work is included in  various public and private collections, including Canada Council's Art Bank, Rideau Hall, Manitoba Hydro, Province of Manitoba and Manitoba Craft  Museum and Library.
